Mr. Sydney Rodney Lungu is an Information Technology professional with over 15 years of hands-on experience in data management, database development, and fieldwork supervision within social science research projects. He is currently serving as a Senior Data Manager at the Invest in Knowledge Initiative (IKI), a leading research institution based in Zomba, Malawi.
Mr. Lungu has played a key role in the design, development, and programming of complex Electronic Data Capture (EDC) systems for large-scale research projects. He is proficient in a wide range of data collection platforms, including ODK, SurveyCTO, CSPro, REDCap, and Tangerine. His expertise also extends to Computer-Assisted Interviewing (CAI) techniques, including self-administered digital surveys.
He possesses strong technical skills in Android-based data collection applications, development of data entry systems, and data cleaning and preliminary analysis using STATA. Additionally, he has extensive experience in preparing field progress and monitoring reports, ensuring high standards of data quality throughout the research lifecycle.
Mr. Lungu recognizes that robust data collection protocols must be complemented by equally strong data management practices to ensure accuracy and reliability in analysis. His work emphasizes the critical role of high-quality data management in achieving credible research outcomes.
Beyond data management, he has expanded his expertise into field operations, including supervision and coordination of large field teams. He has contributed to the development of both quantitative and qualitative research instruments, and has trained and managed research assistants and data entry personnel across multiple projects.
As a Field Supervisor, Mr. Lungu has been instrumental in pre-fieldwork preparations, including logistics planning, translation and back-translation of survey tools, and recruitment of field staff in collaboration with senior management.
He has worked on several complex, high-impact research projects commissioned by international organizations such as USAID, the World Bank, Social Impact, Abt Associates, Impaq, and various universities in the United States. He has also participated in international training programs in data management in the United States, as part of IKI’s institutional capacity-building partnerships.
